The Correct Sequence of Skincare Application
THE BASIC ORDER OF THINGS
CLEANSE > TONE > MOISTURIZE > PROTECT
WHY: Function. Cleansing removes surface dirt but toning removes deeper-seated grime (why you still see some gunk on your cotton ball after swiping on toner). Moisturizer locks in water to keep your skin’s barrier layer strong and soft. Sunscreen is your final barrier against skin-damaging sun and light.
BETA-HYDROXY GOES FIRST
ID BEFORE OTHER ACTIVES
WHY: Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, making it able to penetrate parts of the skin that water-soluble alpha-hydroxy acids can’t get to. If you have an Id Toner or Cream, applying it first helps other actives penetrate more areas of skin and heighten efficacy.
DOES MAKEUP RUIN MY SKINCARE?
NO; THEY PLAY WELL TOGETHER.
HOW: Obviously, we’re not talking about makeup that causes rashes or acne — avoid those, period. Good makeup can be an added physical barrier against sun and light. Plus, makeup goes on and blends better when applied over skin that’s clean, healthy and smooth. That said, skincare is the priority. Some makeup may have skin benefits but it’s skin care that makes your skin healthy.
WHEN TO APPLY OIL?
DAYTIME: LAST STEP BEFORE SUNSCREEN
NIGHTTIME: LAST STEP
WHY: Molecular size. The fatty acids of virgin coconut oil penetrate the skin, but oil molecules are large and stay on the skin’s surface — why it’s so great at trapping water and protecting the skin’s barrier.

if you are using re everything cream and eye serum, which comes first in application since both falls in id?
Which comes first re-everything cream or eye serum? I’m confused.
Hi Meg! We don’t normally recommend the Re-Everything Cream on the eye area, so the Eye Serum can be applied pretty much at any time before an Armada sunscreen in the morning, or as your last product at night. If you’re also using Know-It-Oil coconut oil, it would be Eye Serum then coconut oil then sunscreen in the morning, or Eye Serum, then coconut oil at night.
