Reminder: Sunscreen is YOUR Best Friend!

Arguably more than another other skincare product, sunscreen does the most for your skin in terms of vanity and lifesaving health! Rain or shine, summer or winter, sunscreen should be a non-negotiable part of your daily regimen. Here’s why:

The Irreversible Impact of Sun Damage

Sun damage isn’t just something that happens when spending time outdoors or at the beach. It accumulates over time, even from brief exposures like walking to your car or sitting near a window. UVA rays, which, unlike UVB rays, penetrate glass, are particularly insidious. UVA is well proven to cause not only skin cancer but also immunosuppression and other serious health issues. If health concerns aren’t enough to convince you, consider this: sun exposure is the number one cause of premature aging: wrinkles, discoloration, and sagging skin.

Indoor Sunlight: A Surprising Culprit

Visible light (also called “blue light”) from screens and artificial sources can contribute to dark spots and skin damage, adding to the importance of daily protection.

Sunscreen as Skin Care

Modern skincare has evolved, and today’s sunscreens go beyond basic protection. Products like Armada not only shield against harmful UV rays but also boast antioxidants and barrier-repairing ingredients. Think of them as multitasking creams that enhance your skin’s health while providing essential sun protection … without feeling heavy or greasy!

“Nano” Might Be a “No-No” … Or Not

While a white cast or heavy feeling have been classic complaints for sunscreens, many newer formulations feel far lighter and go on less visibly or fade quickly. Some other products that feel incredible and go on invisibly might be using nanoparticle sunscreen ingredients. These ingredients have a very small molecular size (why they feel and look so good) and the jury is out as to how this might affect our health (how much they penetrate the skin) and our environment.

While not standard in patch test trays yet, there are some reports of irritation, contact dermatitis, and triggering of atopic dermatitis with nanoparticles sunscreens. In hypoallergenicity, a best practice is using ingredients with a larger molecular size. The smaller the size, the higher the risk of a reaction. Nanoparticles have grown in popularity due to their smoother, lighter feel and less-white finish, but VMV does not use ingredients in nanoparticle form in any of our products due to this risk.

Important Sunscreen Reminders

  • Broad-Spectrum Protection: Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen like Armada to defend against both UVA and UVB and even indoor rays. Choosing a hypoallergenic formula reduces the risk of skin reactions, making it easier to incorporate sunscreen into your daily routine.
  • Sunscreen is a Daily, Year-Round Necessity: UVB rays are most intense from 10 am to 4 pm, but UVA rays are constant throughout daylight hours, regardless of cloud cover. Whether you’re at the beach or in the city, sunrise to sunset, sunscreen should be a constant companion. Sunscreen isn’t just for summer. It’s essential in all seasons and environments — whether you’re skiing in the mountains, swimming in the ocean, or navigating the urban jungle.
  • Reapply: When spending time outdoors, reapply every one to two hours, and after water immersion or toweling off.
  • Indoor and Outdoor Use: Don’t be fooled by windows. They block UVB rays but not UVA. Whether you’re at home, in the office, or driving, sunscreen remains essential.
  • Skin Cancer Awareness: Skin cancer can affect anyone, regardless of skin tone or ethnicity. Regularly check your skin for unusual spots or changes in moles, and consult a dermatologist promptly if you notice anything concerning. Early detection is key to effective treatment.
  • Take Sunscreen Everywhere: Whether you’re hiking, lounging on the beach, or exploring the city, make sunscreen your constant companion. Keep a tube handy in your bag or car to ensure you’re always protected against the sun’s harmful rays.

By making sunscreen a daily habit, you’re not just safeguarding your skin against damage. You’re investing in its long-term health and radiance. Prioritize your skin’s well-being today for a healthier (and longer) tomorrow.
