Quaternium-15
Ever present in standard patch test trays, this popular preservative is a top contact allergen and related to another: formaldehyde (which was the American Contact Dermatitis Society’s Allergen of the Year in 2015).
This means that if you’ve patch tested positive to quaternium-15 you should also avoid other formaldehyde-releasing ingredients such as:
- Bromonitropropane diol,
- 2-bromo-2nitropropane-1, 3-diol
- DMDM hydantoin
- Dowcill 75, 100, 200
- Tris (hydroxymethyl) nitromethane
- Chloroallyl methenamine chloride
- Imidazolidinyl urea
- Hexamethylenetetramine chloroallyl chloride
- Diazolidinyl urea
- 3,5,7-triaza-1-azoniaadamantane,1-(3- chloroallyl)-,chloride • N-(3-chloroallyl)hexaminium chloride
- CASRN: 51229-78-8
- 1-(3-Chloroallyl)-3,5,7-triaza-1- azoniaadamantane
chloride, cis form - Azoniaadamantane chloride
- Preventol D 1
Quaternium-15 can be found in many products, including:
- Makeup like blushes and other powders; mascara
- Skincare, especially shampoos, body washes and cleansers; shaving cream; sunscreen
- Baby washes and products
- Pet shampoo
- Some medications
- Home or industrial cleaning products and disinfectants
- Polishes and waxes
- Paints
- Inks, printing and etching products; paper products; adhesives and glues.

Regularly published reports on the most common allergens by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group and European Surveillance System on Contact Allergies (based on over 28,000 patch test results, combined), plus other studies. Remember, we are all individuals — just because an ingredient is not on the most common allergen lists does not mean you cannot be sensitive to it, or that it will not become an allergen. These references, being based on so many patch test results, are a good basis but it is always best to get a patch test yourself.
