CHEWING GUM, BUBBLE GUM: Allergen or Not An Allergen?

Allergen

Chewing Gum, Bubble Gum

While you might not be touching gum a lot, there are frequently several ingredients that are top contact allergens in popular chewing and bubble gums. As with toothpaste and eating utensils, the contact can be enough to cause perioral dermatitis, contact dermatitis, irritations, and other skin concerns.

Some top contact allergens found in many gum brands include:

  • Rosin (Colophony)
  • Beeswax
  • Limonene
  • Terpenes (what tends to make many flowers and other substances like camphor allergens)
  • Flavors (flavors are related to fragrance), mint, cinnamon
  • Dyes — note that some of these can come off on your hands and around the mouth, increasing prolonged contact

Some chewing gums may also contain fluoride which, while not an allergen, is an irritant and can cause perioral dermatitis or halogen acne.

What can help:

  • Get a patch test. You might be allergic to an ingredient that isn’t in your favorite gum (which you can ask your dermatologist to include in your patch test) but in something else that you’re using like a lip balm or toothpaste.
  • Once you have your patch test results, use them as a guide to try to find a chewing gum without your allergens.
  • If you have perioral dermatitis, opt for toothpaste like Essence Skin-Saving Toothpaste that’s free of fluoride, flavor, and amidoamines, and other top contact allergens. Consider virgin coconut oil as a mouthwash. Follow other tips here.
  • Use fragrance-free, dye-free, paraben-free, preservative-free, allergen-free skincare and makeup to help reduce the risk of irritation around the mouth and on the lips, chin, and jaw.

Regularly published reports on the most common allergens by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group and European Surveillance System on Contact Allergies (based on over 28,000 patch test results, combined), plus other studies. Remember, we are all individuals — just because an ingredient is not on the most common allergen lists does not mean you cannot be sensitive to it, or that it will not become an allergen. These references, being based on so many patch test results, are a good basis but it is always best to get a patch test yourself.
