Not An Allergen.
Sulfates:
“Sulfates” is a pretty broad term that has gotten a lot of bad press. While some of these bubble-producers are proven irritants, they are not on published allergen lists.
Sulfates like SLS (Soduim Lauryl Sulfate/Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate) and SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate/Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate) are fairly well tolerated, but there are more reports of irritant reactions to SLS than SLES. In both cases, the irritations seem to be directly related to their concentration in the formulation — the more of the stuff in a formulation, the higher the risk of an irritation.
CAUTION: “sulfate-free” sounds safer but may not be. First, sulfates aren’t allergens. Second, and ironically, many of the ingredients used as alternatives to sulfates are published allergens and therefore more likely to cause skin and scalp problems. “Amido-amine” surfactants, for example, like CocAMIDE-Dea, CocAMIDOpropyl-Betaine, and OleAMIDOpropyl dimethylamine are common allergens.
To be sure, and if you think you might have contact dermatitis, ask your dermatologist for a patch test.

Remember, we are all individuals — just because an ingredient is not on the most common allergen lists does not mean you cannot be sensitive to it, or that it will not become an allergen.
